CLIMATE
Lying in the Lerma Valley, at around 1187 meters above sea level, and at the foot of the 20 de Febrero and San Bernardo mountains, is one of the pleasantest and most fertile areas formed by nature in this part of the country. Thanks to this protected location, despite its relative proximity to the equator, it has a pleasant and temperate climate.
The weather in the capital city of Salta offers mild summers and dry, temperate winters, with an annual average temperature of 22º Celsius, making it ideal during almost the whole year.
Correspondingly, the absolute maximum of 34,6º C for January (as well as the average temperature of that month - 21,3º), give a categorical lie to the myth of high summer temperatures in Salta. These values are considerably lower than those recorded in other more southerly latitudes in Argentina, as well as in the southern traditional vacation spots in our country.
Annual rainfall is 630 mm, with half in summer and 10 mm in winter.
A basic fact enabling one to judge the heat in Salta is the number of days a year when the temperature goes over 32º (90ºF).
WHAT TO PACK
To better enjoy your stay in Salta, you should wear light and comfortable clothing and comfortable footwear. You should beware of slipping on many parts of the trekking circuits. We recommend you take along UV-protected sunglasses, sunscreen with a minimum factor of 30 for your face and lips, a visor cap and mosquito repellent, as well as a sweatshirt of sweater for the cooler nights.
HEALTH
There are no endemic diseases in this area, so no special vaccines are required for entry.
Argentina is free of foot and mouth disease, so beef can be safely eaten.
Argentina has an important network of hospitals, clinics and sanitary posts throughout its territory, most with emergency services. The hospitals in the main cities can deal with high-complexity cases, while treatment is basic in nature in the remote villages.
WATER
All the Argentine cities that figure on your itinerary have drinking water treatment plants. However, to avoid any kind of problem, we recommend you drink bottled water, especially when visiting remote attractions.
TRADITIONAL GASTRONOMY
Argentine cuisine is very varied, and we can mention the typical dishes such as asado, ensaimada, carbonada, locro and the regional empanadas, tamales, etc. In this case in point there is a highly developed cuisine that is centuries old and changes according to the particular area you visit. Variety is the main feature of Salta cuisine, as shown for example in the Pastel de Cambray, with the most typical item being the mysterious and delicious Empanadas Salteñas (Salta meat pasties).
