BACK TO ARGENTINA TRAVEL GUIDE
CLIMATE
This features hot summers and mild winters; rainfall occurs throughout the year, with an annual total of 1,000 to 1,200 mm. In western Chaco, maximum temperatures can top 40º Celsius while the minimum can go under 0º C. The western half of the province features a sub-tropical climate with a dry season and high summer temperatures, dropping as one goes southwards, and a mean annual temperature of 20º C., and a wide temperature range thanks to the inland nature of the western half, including summer rainfall due to clouds formed by major evaporation, and mild winters that come with some June and July frosts.
WHAT YOU SHOULD PACK
For maximum enjoyment of your stay, the best thing is to take light and comfortable clothes and strong shoes (there is often mud on the dirt roads). Watch out for skidding on many of the itineraries. It is a good idea not to forget your sunglasses with UV protection, sunscreen (minimum factor of 30) for your face and lips, a visor cap and mosquito repellent.
HEALTH
As there are no endemic diseases here, no special vaccine is required for entry.
Argentina is free of foot and mouth disease, so beef consumption is risk-free.
Our country has an important network of hospitals, clinics and sanitary posts throughout its territory, most with emergency services. The hospitals in the main cities can deal with high-complexity cases, while treatment is basic in nature in the remote villages.
WATER
All Argentine cities have drinking water treatment plants. However, to avoid any possible problems it is a good idea to drink bottled water, especially when visiting the remoter attractions.
TYPICAL CUISINE
Cooking in this province is heavily influenced by Paraguay. The typical stew is "locro norteño" featuring beef, corn, pumpkin (calabash), "sopa paraguaya" and mandioca. The "mbeyú" or fried mandioca starch cake is a guarani specialty eaten with milk, cheese and salt. The chipa is another cake containing all these ingredients plus egg, and the "sopa paraguaya", that is not a soup at all, but rather a bread made with white cornflour, cheese, onions and spices. The most popular dessert is "dulce de mamon".
