CORDOBA

LA CALERA

Born as one of the first summer villas for the upper class society of Cordoba, it has acquired the recent status of 'bedroom town' (a classification with which most of the towns located around the great metropolis of Cordoba have been labelled with), due to the fact that most of its population have their jobs and business at the City of Cordoba.

The main tourist attractions at La Calera are its beach resorts at the shores of the Suquía River, which are provided with campsites and lodging facilities, historical circuits, adventure tourism activities such as horse riding, trekking, paragliding, touring aboard all-terrain vehicles and many others.

This is a place for those who fancy visiting naive towns, escaping from the turmoil and rush of the greater cities, for those who are able to find peace at the streams and beach resorts or are willing to enjoy the taste of a steak under the shadows of the willows. A kind of mini-tourism can be practised at La Calera and its surrounding villages.

It is possible to travel, starting from La Calera, the road that goes by Saldán, Villa Allende and the northern zone of the Sierras Chicas mountain range.

Near the Town of Saldán, along the river, groups of fishermen gather aiming for a lucky catch with their hooks and unsophisticated nets, but there are others who would rather enjoy the facilities of the Municipal Beach Resort, favouring the nights filled with the popular songs of the region coming out of the radio.

The Laguna Azul, nailed among the mountains, is the gathering point for the fans of nautical sports, especially those who love diving and having fun. Other attractions within this region are El Diquecito and Las Mesadas, favourite destinations for all the enthusiastic lovers of fishing, mountaineering and barbecues.

In La Calera, all seasons of the year have their allure, but it is throughout autumn when nature gets clad with a perfect and unique palette.

The traveller can walk around and never stop from getting surprised at each turn of the road, at the nearby sierra, with the untouched nature of the scenery, or with the cheerful singing of the streams. The better way of coming to this place from the City of Córdoba is by the Colón Avenue, passing by the headquarters of the Third Body of the Army.

USEFUL DATA

Distance from Córdoba: 18 kilometres

Altitude: 500 metres above sea level.

Weather: Dry and pleasant.

Lodging: it still remains underdeveloped. Nevertheless, there are some good hotels, rental houses, bars, discotheques, malls, campsites and beach resorts.

Campsites: There are many places in which to camp with safety and with aboundance of water within the mountains at only minute distance from the Town. There is also a private campsite at the new beach resort.

Communications: La Calera is the access San Roque Dam Station Cordoba Argentinadoor to the La Punilla Valley by the San Roque Reservoir and Bialet Masse, over 17 kilometres of paved road, which melts with the impressive and wild surrounding landscape, along with the river and the railways that run by the flanks of the mountains, the latter of which presents two tunnels drilled within the rocky core of the mountains.
Train in Cordoba ArgentinaLa Calera is connected to the City of Córdoba by two splendid and beautiful smoothly paved roads. There is also an efficient and modern bus service, which runs between this locality and the Capital City, and continues further on to the neighbouring Town of Cosquín. The Train of the Sierras is another good choice for transportation. The Town also contains a post office and telephone booths.

EXCURSIONS

Capilla Vieja: It was built in the year of 1727 by the Jesuits, who exploited the natural wealth of its deposits of lime (cal in Spanish, which explains the source of the name La Calera), most useful material for the great works they accomplished in this Town. It is almost certain that the person behind the making of the Chapel was Andrés Bianchi (SJ), as can be told by the presence of many fine details this building contains, an example of which is the altarpiece itself.

Molino Doble: This mill was raised at the vicinity of the Chapel, beside Route E-55 circa 1776. Facing the mentioned Chapel, Father Noble Canelas built a hydraulic powered mill for grains. At the present days remain the main building, a grinding stone and some traces of the old channel.

Municipality of La Calera: Inside this edifice constructed in 1935 functions since 1963 the Municipal Museum of Belles Arts, which was created by instances of the painter Ricardo Pedroni.

El Chorrito: This place is situated at the western side of the locality and was built by Doctor Tornú in order to provide the Town with filtered water.

Mal Paso Reservoir: This dam was projected by the engineers Dumesnil and Cassaffousth and built by the doctor Bialet Massé between 1884 and 1886. It was constructed with the objective of testing the quality of the lime this region contained.

Heliópolis Compound: This tourist attraction consists of a swimming pool at the margins of the Suquía River.

Laguna Azul - The Blue Lagoon: This place was once one of the many quarries which existed around this area. With the passing of time, several water fountains flooded the place and transformed it into the present crystal water mirror. At this place a private beach resort was arranged, enabling the visitor to practise diving and several other nautical sports.

Vieja Usina - The Old Energy Plant: This place was constructed between 1897 and 1902. In the present days it hosts the Historical Museum of Electric Power.
