Achiras is a locality nestled at the Sierra de los Comechingones and shows a population of 2,461 inhabitants. It stands as the most important tourist centre of the Sierras del Sur.

It is a most picturesque area with thick woodlands crossed by many streams. It is familiarly called "La Linda del Sur Cordobés" or "The Beauty of Southern Cordoba", possessing scenarios of great natural richness and appeal, besides other sites of historical importance. This locality, adorned by its landscape and renowned by its antiquity, can be described as a place whose history has been cast over its natural beauty.

The history of Achiras goes back to the year of 1570, when we can find the first mentions of it. Later documents recall of the existence of the 'Posta de los Nogales', which was situated beside the Camino Real, acknowledging the presence of General San Martín on his way to Cuyo. The Conquer of the Desert is also mentioned in old records.

Strolling by the streets of this town will indeed prove to be a very interesting task, giving the visitor the distinctive impression as if some of its areas have remained frozen in time. The oldest mansions stand at the sides of the Cabrera Street, which is also known as the 'Rosarinos Neighbourhood'. This street also contains a church built during the past century and the Roca Square, over which grounds once existed a fortress. Another attractive place to visit is the Achiras Museum, placed within an old mansion built in 1870. There is also a 200-year-old church that keeps an image of Nuestra Señora de la Merced.

At Achiras you will find a beach resort and many interesting places for excursions, which can be made either by foot, at horseback or by guided tours. There is one hotel, four campsites, some ten houses for rent and a couple ranches where the visitor would be able to lodge in.

Among the best places where the tourist can spend some great times we can mention the river, the Los Coquitos Stream, the Beach Resort, Los Nogales, the Piedra del Águila, La Ollita, Las Catitas, LaTorrecita and El Ojito, Cerro Colorado Mountain and Cerro Intihuasi Mountain.

Beach Resort: This is one of the greatest summer time attractions of this locality, besides a river that carries a regular amount of water, giving birth to a 150-square-metre natural pool surrounded by thickets of trees providing large amounts of shadow, and being supplied with all the required services equalling those of the best campsites of the Country.

El Ojito - Stone Paintings: It offers guided tours throughout the year by means of discovering, understanding and valuing the autochthon culture of the Comechingones and its proximate environment, whose main objective is to awaken within yourself a conscience regarding our cultural patrimony.

Los Nogales: This is a program of guided tours that can be hired all-year-round, allowing the visitor to travel as well as to discover some of the most important historical places of the region. The visitor will come across an ancient hostelry within which, after the year of 1775, a number of illustrious characters from the history of Argentina were hosted in, all encased within a wonderful natural landscape and the charming presence of a slithering stream.

Historical Urban Circuit: The tour and the explaining lectures start on the sector that contains the oldest municipal buildings of the Town, which were constructed between 1880 and 1920, and going across the historical circuit, we will visit the old Las Achiras stronghold, in which the army was posted in the year of 1832. As we continue our progress through the historical centre, we will reach the Las Mercedes Church, which stands at this place since 1830, and where the image of the Virgen de las Mercedes is worshipped since the year of 1843.

Casa de la Cultura: At this place we will find a museum containing an exhibition that illustrates the life, costumes, utensils and the environment of the pre-historic dwellers of this region. It also contains the findings from several excavations done within the grounds of this place. The visit will then continue by the historical files, where we will learn more things concerning the past history of the Town and the Region.
