RIO CUARTO

Rio Cuarto is also known as "The Empire of the South". It is the head city of the Department and the second city in importance within the Province. This locality is the business centre of the region, attaining not only an economical influence over the Departments of Tercero Arriba, Juarez Celman, Presidente Roque Saenz Peña, General Roca and Calamuchita, but cultural, social and of infrastructure as well, not to mention several other localities from neighbouring Provinces.

What to Visit

Municipal Museum of Belles Arts.
It was founded in the year of 1933 thanks to the supporting funds and objects provided by the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes besides the donations handled by some private collections. It is the seat of the Trapalanda Cultural Centre. Its exhibit halls comprise the works of local and national artists. The present building was inaugurated on September 5th of 1964, because the museum was formerly located at the White Hall of the Municipality.

The art collection of this Museum, comprising official and private donations as well as contributions from local, national and international artists, displays a number of acrylic and water paintings along with drawings, photographs, gouache, etchings; lacquer, oil and pastel paintings, reproductions and sculptures.

Regional Historical Museum General I.Fotheringham
The house that hosts this Museum was built in 1860. It was initially the home of the Ordóñez Villalba family, before being handled over to the Nation as the headquarters of the Comandancia de la Frontera Sur where General Fotheringham dwelled. The Museum proper was created one 14th of January of 1964, wherein archaeological objects and recreations from the urban life and the rural cooking are exhibited. It also contains a small square called "Expedición del Desierto", where a half-body sculpture from the famous general is shown.

There is also displayed information about the first inhabitants of the region, as well as from the conquering of the desert, the struggling between the white men and the aborigines, the mixing of the races, the ranches and the army strongholds, the founding of towns, the participation of the Church, the domination of the aborigines and the arrival of the immigrants. One of the main supporters of this Museum was Don José Bozzano, a local collector who bestowed his 2,000 pieces private collection. The RegionalHistorical Museum was declared a Regional Historical Monument in 1975 and a Historical Site in 1978, being furbished as a museum proper since the year of 1981, during the 195th anniversary of the Town.

Museo del Riel
It is located within the old building of the Andean Cultural Centre, inside the installations of the Andean Railway Station, constructed in 1873. This train station was refurbished although its original 19th century structure was maintained. The Museum is devoted to the times of bliss of the railroad in Río Cuarto.

A still functioning locomotive car is exhibited at this place, along with an assorted collection of other objects concerning the topic of trains. This is the first and only technological and interactive museum of the town. It also has a modern stage where diverse cultural activities are programmed. The Gallery and Workshop of Argentinean Artists is also located within these building, along with the Municipal Historical Registries, the regional premises for the Rio Cuarto's S.A.D.E. and the Historical Municipal Board.

National Museum of Technology
This is a joint venture between the Air Forces of Argentina, the Foundation for Culture, and the Area Material Río Cuarto. By the time it will be concluded, this museum will be the largest of the Province as well as from the entire inner regions of the Country.
