CORDOBA

COSQUIN

The Cosquin Stream Cordoba Argentina TravelLocated 47 kilometres to the north of the Capital of the Province of Cordoba, it can be reached through Route 38. This Town, Capital of the Department of La Punilla, lay at the feet of the Pan de Azucar Mountain, at an altitude of 708 metres above sea level and at the margins of the Cosquín River.

It is widely renowned at both national and international levels, as the seat of the impressive Festival Nacional del Folclore, which has been uninterruptedly performed since January of 1961, conveying dozens of thousands of visitors every year. This festival has turned into the main event of popular song in Argentina. The entire City becomes a party at all times: the different peñas (folk restaurants) where local gastronomy and traditional chanting can be enjoyed by costumers, stay open until the small hours of the day, and in the afternoons the rooky folklore performers, aiming for fame and fortune, gather up in the beach resorts at the shores of the Cosquín River.

This zone was formerly inhabited by the henios, the sanavirones and the comechingones indigenous people. The origins of the Town went back to the year of 1625, when it was called "Cami Cosquina" or "Small Cuzco". Cosquina means 'viewing point' and Cuzco 'town of men near the Sierra'

Great numbers of beautiful beaches and a wealthy air favoured by its special microclimate have made of this the ideal place to recover from ailments and diseases of the respiratory system. The festivity in honour of Virgin Mary, the Patroness Saint of the Town, takes place every year on the 7th day of October.
