SAN SALVADOR DE JUJUY

The Provincial Archaeological Museum
Created in April of 1994, it is the specific entity in charge of receiving the area's archaeological remains. Here you will find four halls with exhibits of primitive stone and ceramic pieces found in the Departments of San Pedro, Santa Catalina and Yavi; there are also metal artefacts from Tilcara and Humahuaca.

In one of the halls you will be able to observe a diorama representing the life in the area 9000 years ago when the local hunter gatherers had not yet reached the stage of living in villages; a ceramic female figure 2600 years old; a collection of stone arrowheads and other artefacts from every day life at that time.

You will also find the mummified body of a 2-year-old infant, from approximately 1000 years ago. The child was about two years old when he died and its mummy still conserves its teeth and hair.
