North of Tilcara, 26 kilometres down Ruta Nacional Nº 9 National Route, the traveller will find, just before arriving in the small village Huacalera, a monolith called the Tropic of Capricorn - "Trópico de Capricornio", erected in memory of the patriots that fought in the Wars of Independence from the Spanish Crown between the years 1810 and 1825.

A small and picturesque place, Huacalera is located at 2641 m.a.s.l. and has at present a population of 335 people. In older days it was an Omaguaca indigenous parcel country, and as a reminder of those times there still stands the small myth filled chapel built in the year 1657.

It is a jewel of colonial architecture. It contains one of the most important and valuable collections of paintings of the Cuzco School of Painting as are the nine so called "Ángeles arcabuceros" or Harquebusier Angels, dressed as a heavenly militia, as well as the Wedding of the Virgin ''Casamiento de la Virgen'' and the Baptism of the Virgin "El Bautismo de la Virgen", both unique in their subject matter.

The altar dates back to the year 1699. The tabernacle is another piece of art with two of its sides has frescoes showing Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The most valuable part of the chapel is the altarpiece, the work of primitive artists from the Puna highland plateau, the oldest in the region.

The Huacalera Post is one of the oldest colonial settlements. It also has a schoolhouse dating back to 1825. The mill from colonial times, built by the Jesuits and the archaeological site of Pucará de Molla, are its most outstanding attractions. There is a well-known hostelry in the village.

MONOLITH TO THE TROPIC OF CAPRICORN - TRÓPICO DE CAPRICORNIO
It is located at the entrance to the village. Here you will also find the sundial, which is located on the line where the Tropic of Capricorn passes through the Province.

On one side of the Ruta Nacional Nº 9, a 100 kilometres from San Salvador de Jujuy. Activities to practise: observation, photography.

THE MILL - EL MOLINO
The Jesuits built it in the XVIIth century. It has been restored and the present owners use it an allow visitors. It is to be found at La Banda, 200 metres from the village of Uquía.

To get there you must cross the bridge over the Río Grande River. Visiting Hours: Every day from 8:00 Am till 6:00 PM.

THE YACORAITE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
A pre Hispanic settlement where you can find more or less defined dwellings on the top of the hill. It can be found in the gorge - quebrada of the same name where its small river runs into the Quebrada de Humahuaca Gorge.

THE LOS AMARILLOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
A pre Hispanic settlement, which still standing dwellings were of a rectangular shape, usually not very big. There are door openings and masonry walls. It is located in the Yacoraite quebrada, built on a platform and part of an adjacent hill.
