PALPALA
At 14 kilometres from San Salvador de Jujuy, the traveller will find a myth filled town called Palpalá, where he or she will find the first steel mill ever in Argentina, called Aceros Zapla, where the first cast iron was poured in 1945, using ore from their own mines.
Palpalá has about 10000 hectares with planted eucalyptus to use as charcoal, which was then used in the mill. Two iron ore mines called 9 de Octubre and Puesto Viejo, were also part of the complex and there was also a lime stone quarry.
Today, the town situated at 1125 m.a.s.l. has a population of close to 47000 people. The traveller can also visit the close by original mine gallery where the iron ore was first found and which gave rise to the abovementioned steel mill.
Access is down the Ruta Nacional Nº 66 National Route, and the Rutas Provinciales Nº 1, Nº 49 and Nº 56 Provincial Routes.
