JUJUY
TRES CRUCES
Located at 118 kilometres from the capital city, down Ruta Nacional Nº 9, and at 3693 m.a.s.l. you will find the first village of the Puna highlands of Jujuy: Tres Cruces.
On the way to the village, the traveller will be able to observe a reddish sedimentary fold called the Devil's Spine.
Also very close north of the village you will find the Archaeological site Tres cruces, where there is a cave with paintings and also an ancient settlement. The paintings are grouped at the end and the right hand side of the cave. The colours used are red, white and yellow. The figures are small, plane and linear.
In the settlement you will find ruins, remnants of dwellings with both rectangular and rounded corner layouts with dry stonewalls without mortar. The walls are thick and one can see door openings.
The Tres Cruces settlement coincides with the 1333/ 500 kilometre mark of the FFCC Belgrano Railroad. From this point you climb up the ravine about 400 metres to reach it.
Access to the place: Dirt road.
Can be visited throughout the whole year, although seasonal summer rains may cut the road temporarily.
An excellent area to observe nature, take photos, trek and horseback ride.
MINA "AGUILAR" MINE
Located 48 kilometres from Tres Cruces, it is one of the most important mines in America with deposits of lead, zinc and silver ore.
