BACK TO ARGENTINA TRAVEL GUIDE
CLIMATE
This province is in season all year round: it has a temperate arid to semi-arid type climate with micro-climates. The average annual temperature of La Rioja is 19° Celsius, with summer and winter averages of 25° C and 12° C respectively. The summers are somewhat rainy and slightly hot, while the winters here typically offer the greatest amount of sunshine and luminosity to be found in the whole country. This is rounded off by a lack of strong winds and a low humidity level, especially in the capital city. In summer, temperatures can go over 40° Celsius, because of which the ideal time of year for tourism in La Rioja is from May through September.
WHAT TO PACK
You are recommended to bring along cool clothing for the day and a jacket or sweater for the cooler nights. Remember a sun cap, sunglasses and sunscreen. Informal and comfortable wear is recommended.
HEALTH
There are no endemic diseases, so no special vaccines are necessary for entry.
Argentina is free of foot and mouth disease, so beef consumption is not risky.
Argentina has an important network of hospitals, clinics and medical posts throughout its territory, most of them possessing emergency services. In the main cities, the hospitals can treat high complexity cases, while services in remote villages are at the basic level.
WATER
The drinking water here comes from crystalline mountain streams fed by meltwater and springs. All the Argentine cities mentioned on your itinerary have drinking water treatment plants. However, to avoid any possible inconvenience, it is best to drink bottled water, especially when visiting the more distant attractions.
LOCAL CUISINE
Argentine food is a mixture of Spanish, Basque and Italian cooking. The beef is of a very high standard of quality, so barbecue dinners are recommended. Among the typical local dishes are empanadas, cazuela riojana and locro (made from corn and pork). La Rioja has excellent dulce de cayote. In general, Argentine restaurants offer very high quality food.
Beverages: Argentine wines are very good and cheap. There are extensive vineyards at the foot of the mountain ranges. The highly reputed wines from La Rioja wineries have won several international prizes.
