Pareditas (Little Walls)
Bucolic and old location where travelers can still admire part of the corrals and fences that, during the 18th and 19th centuries, protected the cattle and the farming from the indigenous incursions. By the end of the 17th century, the Fuerte San Juan de Nepomuceno fort was built and used to support the Fuerte San Carlos fort, for during those years the place was the border with natives' land.
Laguna del Diamante - Lagoon
South of San Carlos, taking the Ruta Nacional Nº 40, up to its connection with the Ruta Provincial Nº 101, and up to the west, begins a snail like ascent that later descends to the Laguna del Diamante lagoon.
Resting at 3,300 meters above sea level, the water mirror formed by the lagoon's surface reflects the imposing summit of the Maipo volcano and the mountains seconding it, resembling a blue, violet and sky blue diamond; therefore its name. The scenery is hence indescribable.
In the year 1994, the 10,000 hectares embracing the Maipo volcano, the lagoon and a bunch of beautiful and crystalline streams, where declared a Protected Natural Area, thus forming a great reserve.
The lagoon is nine kilometers long and three kilometers width, with a depth that in some sectors gets to 70 meters. The water rich Rio Diamante river is born here, and in and around its waters high altitude scuba diving and trekking are practiced. There are picnic areas and autochthonous species such as the puyen, the Patagonian pejerrey, the peladilla, the Creole trout, and introduced species like the salmon, the king salmon, the encerrado, the stream trout and the brown trout are fished.
Very close to the lagoon rise the dams of Agua del Toro, Los Reyunos, El Tigre and Galileo Vitali, which can be visited and where travelers can sail, row, windsurf, scuba dive, trek, fish and ride horses or motorboats. In the surroundings stands the 25 de Mayo village, where the fort and the Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen church are worth visiting.
TUNUYÁN
Known as the apples' capital, Tunuyán is the main center of the Uco valley. At 80 kilometers from Ciudad de Mendoza, its green sceneries along with the immensity of the valleys and mountain ridges' landscape, have turned this zone into an excellent tourist destination.
It has lodging, and restaurant and bar services. All located in the central Av. San Martin. Taking Uruguay Street, up to Paseo Costanero, the amphitheater is reached, a spot where every February the Fiesta Nacional de la Tonada (Tune National Fiesta) takes place: a folkloric celebration that receives at least 200,000 people throughout its four night duration.
The Paseo Costanero is a longitudinal park 1.5 kilometers long, created to integrate the city to the Rio Tunuyán river. It is beautifully forested, and has an excellent infrastructure for camping and life outdoors lovers.
In Tunuyán, travelers with a sense for adventure tourism will feel in paradise. The town has country and ranch houses and mansions where visitors, attended by the owners themselves, enjoy typical dishes and fine wines from the province; and practice flora and fauna observation, photo safaris, horse riding, Andean crossing, mountaineering, trekking, rappel, scaling and sport fishing.
Moreover, from here excursions to the Manzano Histórico (See Tupungato) can be arranged, from where neighboring Chilean Republic can be reached crossing the Andean Ridge at horseback.
In short, Tupuyán is opened season all year round.
