Attention is from Monday through Friday from 9:30 to 13:30 and from 17:00 to 20:00 hours. On Saturdays only from 9:30 to 12:30 hours.
The Casa de Leguizamon (Historical Museum)
The house was built in the early 19th century for a prosperous tradesman from Salta, General Don Juan Galo Leguizamón. The second story preserves its original appearance almost intact. This is one of the few testimonies left from the Spanish Colonial time's way of life.
Located on 707 Caseros Street.
Artisans Market (Historical House)
In 1968, it opened its doors as the first Artisans Market of Salta and of Argentina as well, in an antique building that had belonged since 1583 to the aristocratic family Arias Velásquez. In 1733 the property was transferred to the Jesuits, until in 1767 King Carlos V banned them from Spain and America. Thus, all of their possessions, scattered around the country -among, which was this house-, turned out to be donated or administered by the so-called "Juntas de Temporalidades".
Alvarado House
Brigade General Don Rudecindo Alvarado, who fought in the wars for the Independence of Argentina and succeeded General San Martín in the command of the Ejército de los Andes Army, resided in this place. He saw action in the battles of Las Piedras, Tucumán, Sala, and during the Chilean and Peruvian campaigns.
Casa del General Felix Arias Rengel (Fine Arts Museum)
Around the middle of the 18th century, Field Master Félix Arias Rengel y Heredia had the house built. The two-story building is a true example of colonial time architecture. On its façade, the handsome entrance portal and the two balconies with its iron railing stand clearly out. Nowadays, this house hosts the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes, where Colonial and Contemporary Art exhibits take place. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1946.
It is located on No 20 Florida street.
Casa de don Pablo Arias Velázquez
Although known as Casa de Arias Velásquez, it was actually built between 1806 and 1808 for Don Juan Galo Leguizamón, a prosperous retailer of Salta. In his memories, General José María Paz tells of a dancing party he attended there, where the Salta aristocracy used to converge. Its features as a corner trade house, going back to colonial epochs, are characterized by the commercial use given to the ground floor, accessed by a double door arranged in a square angle known as "geminada", and a residential function for the upper floors.
Casa de Hernández (City Museum)
This all-colonial style building was constructed for Capitán Juan Hernández y Enríquez around the year 1780. Along with the Houses of Uriburu, Arias Rangel and Leguizamón, it remains as one of the very few examples of dwellings left in Salta from the times of the Spanish dominion.
Located on a corner of the pedestrian zone in the Historical Area of the city, it is one of the few exponents conserved of the colonial "Casas de Altos", typical of the domestic architecture of the 18th century, with commerce on the ground floor and family dwelling on the upper.
The ample interior spaces, which open to a central patio, are limited by thick boulder walls on the lower floor and of adobe on the upper level, leaving few openings to the outside. The inner walls are made of "quincha" or mud-caked straw. The façade is characterized by the double corner door on the ground floor, and above it, a balcony on the second floor. It is located on Calle La Florida N° 97, at the corner of Alvarado street.
Casa de Doña Panchita
This was the house of the grand daughter of general Güemes, Doña Francisca Güemes. The property is in a Gothic style and has Andalusian courtyard patios.
Casa de Güemes
Colonial style house raised in the historical centre of the city, and where General Martín Miguel de Güemes lived until 1812. It dates back to the 18th century and the Minister of Royal Finances of Salta, don Gabriel de Güemes y Montero, ordered its construction. It is actually used for theatre performances, as well as to make musical parties known as "Peñas" and also as an artisans fair. There is a picturesque bar too. In the year 1971 it was declared a National Historic Monument.
The address is Caseros Street No 732.
Finca (Ranch) del General Güemes en La Cruz
Dated from the early 18th century, it belonged to the stepfather of General Martín Miguel de Güemes, Don José Francisco de Tineo, who donated it to Napoleón Güemes in 1843. Towards 1879 it became the property of Adela Güemes, who sold it eight years later. Some traditions, even though not confirmed, sustain that Güemes installed there his General Quarters during the Independence War, but the truth is that it never belonged to him, although it bears his name.
The house has two floors, with balconies and wooden galleries. Its thick adobe walls with stucco support the weight of the roof and supply the adequate isolation to endure the heat variations in the area. The location welds its architecture with the highly prized surrounding landscape. Actually it hosts the "Museo de la Vida Rural Salteña", or " the Salta Country Life Museum".It is 24 kilometres southeast of Salta.
Casa - Museo Presidente José E. Uriburu (Colonial Museum)
Also called "Museo de Usos y Costumbres de los Siglos XVIII y XIX" or Museum of the 18th and 19th Centuries Uses and Traditions", it was built by order of General Félix Arias Rengel, as the home of one of his daughters. Over the years, the house has had successive prestigious proprietors.
In 1802 Don Juan Antonio Alvarez de Arenales, Counsellor and Marshall of Perú and also Overseer Governor of Salta lived there. Around the middle of the 19th century, the family Uriburu purchased it. And it turned to be the birthplace for two presidents of the country, Dr. José Evaristo Uriburu, and Teniente General José Félix Uriburu.
It is one of the oldest houses of the city of Salta, located in the historical centre of the city. The narrow and irregular form of the terrain forced the creation of a non-conventional distribution regarding colonial houses, since the rooms open only to two sides of the courtyard patios.
The first patio is entered across a big portal for carriages. The Reception Halls are located on the first floor, and the second story is reserved for the main bedrooms. The façade presents a non-unitary treatment. The front patio's façade is simply arranged by two Tuscan columns that frame the entrance, toppled by an ogee arch. A wooden structured balcony, with an iron grate and covered by the projection of a tiled roof stands out from the façade. Windows present straight wooden lintels.
It is located on N°417 Caseros Street.
