PLACES TO VISIT

9 DE JULIO SQUARE
Around this place, chosen in the year of 1582 by Hernando de Lerma, the city of Salta was founded. The square is framed by the Zuviría, Caseros, Mitre and España Streets and concentrates around it some of the most meaningful buildings of the city. It also is the only Square in the Country to be surrounded by food stalls and a poultry market. In it there is a monument to the memory of the General José Antonio Alvarez de Arenales, who went along with General San Martín in the campaign with the Liberation Army. Located around the monument, 14 muses represent all the provinces of the Argentinean Nation.

THE BASILICA CATHEDRAL
At one of the sides of the Plaza 9 de Julio Square stands the Basilica Cathedral (Basilica depicts a huge and magnificent church). Its construction started in1858 and concluded in 1882. Its altar is gilded in gold sheets. The images of the Lord and The Virgen del Milagro (Virgin of the Miracle), the city patrons, are placed there, dating from the days of the primitive church that existed there. There is also the "Panteón de las Glorias del Norte"- Pantheon to the Glories of the Northern Campaign, where rest, among others, the remains of General Güemes, Famous hero of the Independence War against the Spanish Crown.

Subdestinations in Salta
CABILDO AND NORTHERN REGION MUSEUM.
The "Cabildo" hosted the government of the vice-royalty from the 16th century until the early 19th century. It then became seat of the province's government until the end of that same century. Its construction started on the same day of the foundation of Salta, on April 16th 1582 ordered by the same founder, Don Hernando de Lerma, to hold the government of Salta del Tucumán. The elected place was the southern corner facing the main square.
With the passing of times from the foundation of the city, the Cabildo still has its original structure, and the residues of history printed on its walls. Even though it has suffered several modifications - in 1676 to improve the building, in 1783 a much-needed reconstruction, and the most recent in 1945 - it still is the most complete and best preserved in all of Argentina.
Nowadays it holds the Museo Histórico del Norte Museum, an austere and well-balanced group of rooms set around two patio courtyards. It fuses together popular Spanish expressions with American re-elaborated forms, as are the corbels with wood carved angels, characterizing the main façade.
Located on 500 Caseros Street, facing the Plaza 9 de Julio Square.

LA MERCED CHURCH
Built in a fine gothic stile, the old Iglesia de la Merced Church is one of the temples that reveal its history among the centre of the city. Inside the building stands the Cross that General Belgrano, another hero of the Independence Wars, ordered to install on the "Campo de Honor", a place where the soldiers who fell in the battle of February 20th 1813 rest. Located at 800 Caseros Street.

SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH AND CONVENT
Church of San Francisco Salta Argentina TravelOne of the most representative examples of the architectonic and historical patrimony of the city is undoubtedly, the Church and Convent of San Francisco. When built around 1625, it was made of adobe walls and straw and mud cake roof. It was reformed in 1882, when the tower that now stands besides the temple was built, one of the tallest of South America with its height of 53 metres. The Church shows eight lateral altars and cherishes a notable image of San Pedro de Alcántara, sculpted by Alonso Cano.
At the Corner of Caseros and Córdova.

SAN BERNARDO CONVENT
The Convent of San Bernardo started out as the Ermita de San Bernardo Hermitage - the Patron Saint of Salta in old times - then in 1586 a neighbouring building destined to be a hospital was erected with the name of San Andrés. Only from the year of 1726 it became in use. Its magnificent Carob wood portal was hand carved by natives in 1762. In the year of 1846 it became the present monastery with the name of Nuevo Carmelo de San Bernardo.

MITRE STREET, BETWEEN CASEROS AND ESPAÑA
In this bock, situated in front of the 9 de Julio Square, one can find the neo-gothic building of the Consejo de Educación y Centro de Cultura América, which functioned as Government Hall from 1950 to 1987, and that later in 1994 was declared National Historical Monument.

BALCARCE STREET
A splendid Salta space, ideal to spend some time chatting or listening to typical music played by some local group or maybe simply to enjoy the night. There are more than two dozen bars, local music bars, restaurants and sweet shops. During weekends a crafts fair is organized on it, displaying fabrics, pottery, basketwork and traditional sweets.

URIBURU MUSEUM HOUSE
One of the oldest Salta houses. Marshall Mariscal Juan Antonio Alvarez de Arenales lived here around the first half of the 19th century. In it, two presidents of the Republic of Argentina were born, both belonging to the Uriburu family, owners of the house. The building becomes organized around two patios, entering the first through a large gate for chariots and at whose sides the main rooms of the house where put. The service rooms surround the second patio, accessed from the first through a narrow hallway. Nowadays, the old "Casona" is a museum where the visitor will have at his disposition an ample library, and a kitchen arranged as in the epoch. There are also on display many objects that depict the uses and traditions of Colonial times. It was built in the late 18th century and is a typical example of colonial Architecture.

VELARDE MUSEUM
An old "casona" house with colonial style that once was property of the dear "Pajarito" Velarde. Today transformed into a museum, exhibiting several collections of paintings, furniture, weaponry, musical instruments and other relics recalling the people who lived in it.

SAN MARTIN PARK
At the end of the Avenida San Martín Avenue where it crosses Hipólito Irigoyen, the traveller will find this beautiful Park, full of large trees, where the monument to Brigadier Arenales can be seen. From the Park, a cable car rises up to the San Bernardo Hill. The cable car schedules are generally from Monday to Friday 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. while on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Natural Sciences Museum) is located on Mendoza Street, inside the area of this beautiful park and near to the lake.

20 DE FEBRERO MONUMENT
In the northern side of the City is found the Monumento a la Batalla de Salta (Monument in Honour of the Battle of Salta), known by the locals as 20 de febrero (20 of February) because on that day in the year of 1813 the victorious deed of General Manuel Belgrano took place. The monument was planned by the sculptor Torcuato Tasso, and is composed of a base in carved stone extracted from the neighbouring mountains and is topped by a magnificent bronze statue symbolizing the Victory on that famous battle.

GENERAL MARTIN GÜEMES MONUMENT
At the foot of the Cerro San Bernardo Hill, and guarding the City, the spectacular monument to General Güemes is located. Carved in stone from the same mountain, it ends up with the equestrian figure of the eminent hero cast in bronze. This monument was planned and performed by the sculptor Victor Gariño. Inaugurated on February 20th 1931 by the then current President of the Nation, Teniente General José Félix Uriburu.

SAN BERNARDO HILL
By a picturesque an winding road of some 10 kilometres that climbs up across a Via Crucis, on foot or on a vehicle, or even in a cable car that departs from the San Bernardo Park, you will arrive to the top of the San Bernardo Hill, 269 metres above the city of Salta.
From the top, the tourist will have a spectacular view of the City and a good share of the Valle de Lerma Valley, and so will understand the surname of "Salta la Linda".

There is a Cristo Redentor (Redeeming Christ) and a Cross. Besides, pretty artificial waterfalls and the chirping of the birds will give you the chance to be in contact with nature while beholding the City surrounded by other mountains.

CRAFTS MARKET
In 1968 the Primer Mercado Artesanal or First Crafts Market opened its doors in a building that had been constructed around the middle of the 18th century, but suffered some modifications along the times until the late 19th century. This handsome "casona" house located in the western part of the City, raises its massive whitewashed adobe walls structure in a lot located at the feet of some low hills known as the Lomas de Madeiro.

Theses lands have close ties to the history of Salta. The chronicles mention that in 1583 the first mill of Salta worked here, due to it the "casona" was known as "Alto Molino" which means High Mill. Then the Jesuit Order took the house until 1760 and later it held the first Salta tannery.

Craftsmen Salteños Salta Argentina TravelThe Market is personally attended by the craftsmen that arrive from the different regions of the Province to show and sell their high quality products done in leather, fabrics, silver, semi precious stones and ceramics.
