SALTA
NORTHEAST TOURIST CIRCUIT
The journey commences in Salta, going through the Ruta Nacional Nº 34 National Route, and passes by General Güemes, which currently concentrates diverse agro industrial activities. It runs across the Selva de Yunga High Mountain Forest, and goes through the localities of Pichanal, Embarcación, Tartagal, Aguaray, Salvador Mazza, Orán and Los Toldos.
Through the same Ruta Nacional Nº 34 travellers arrive at Pichanal, where the Manuel Elordi area is an especial place for fishing dorados, Surubí and other catfish. The road parts in two at Pichanal, one way leading to Orán through the Ruta Nacional Nº 50, and the other to Tartagal continuing through the Ruta Nacional Nº 34. These are the most important cities in the area, for both of them have a great variety of gastronomical delights and lodging to offer.
This journey presents various singular attractions, such as forest covered mountains, aboriginal communities with a great craftsmanship production, oil fields, tropical cultivations like banana, coffee, citrus fruits and sugarcane. Particularly attractive is watching the natives keeping up an old custom of survival, fishing from the Río Bermejo riverbanks with ancient fishing devices.
Besides, it has a series of mini circuits in the surrounding area: the hot spring waters at Los Sauces, the towns and colonial ranch houses of Campo Santo, El Bordo and Cobos. Few kilometres away from each one of these localities is the border with Bolivia.
The Parque Nacional Baritú National Park is nearby.
Crossing the border into Bolivia, either by the locality of Aguas Blancas (RN Nº 50), or by Salvador Mazza (RN Nº 34), is always an interesting alternative.
Total length: 52 Km.
Duration: 14 hours.
