SALTA

RANCHES

LESSER RANCH
It has an extension of 11000 hectares which are fully dedicated to cattle and horse breeding. It has the virtue of having a great variety of landscapes, which are amongst the most beautiful and picturesque in the Province of Salta.

The ranch extends upwards towards the west going through valleys located in plains with abundant grasses that intercalate with dense natural forests of the region, with the presence of tree species such as the walnut tree, the cedar of Salta, the ceiba, the white tipa, etc. There is a post at 3000 metres above sea level located in a truly privileged place that is used as an inn. It is composed of a cluster of small huts with all the commodities for a good rest; being one of them the kitchen, another one the bathroom (with running water, toilet and lavatory), and the remaining two dormitories equipped with all the essentials: bunk beds, salamander heaters, etc.

In order to reach the ranch you need to follow a dirt road that was anciently used as an access road leading to the indigenous populations of the zone, which were integrated to the Inca Empire; there are huge and really old stone corrals that were also utilised in the times of mule trafficking with Alto Peru (current Bolivia).

Due to the ranch's extension and diversity, the tourist package it offers is varied and can be adapted to each visitor's time in hand.

It is at 15 kilometres of Salta, passing through San Lorenzo.

SANTA ANITA RANCH
To milk cows, elaborate homemade cheese and bread, watch the cultivation of medicinal plants, the handling of the Peruvian Pace Horse and the Californian worms, amongst other activities, are offered at the Santa Anita Ranch.

It is an old house from the late XIX century; and the main house, which worked as an inn for drovers moving their cattle from Guachipas up to Salta, now hosts tourists seeking to take part on activities and customs proper of the country way of life.

Setting off from here you can go on archaeological visits to the Caves of Ablomé, which house rock paintings, in the Cabra Corral Dike, or go on horseback rides to the surroundings. It is in a place called Piedras Moradas, in the Department of Coronel Moldes; an hour away from Salta and at five minutes from the Cabra Corral Dike.

EL BORDO DE LAS LANZAS

The historic legacy from the time when Salta was a colony of Spain, the walls of El Bordo de las Lanzas keep, is one of the main attractions of this big old house located in Campo Santo, at 60 kilometres from the capital of Salta.

The main ranch house was commissioned for Magdalena Goyechea de La Corte de Güemes, mother of General Martin Miguel de Güemes, hero of Argentine independence for his fierce defence of the northern border. This was one of the houses where Güemes drilled his men. Its property titles date back to 1609.

Archaeological remains found in the countryside, valuable books, centenarian documents and culinary recipes inherited by their ancestors are still kept in this old house. El Bordo de las Lanzas is also heir of a collection of colonial suites, religious carvings and paintings from the XVII and XVIII centuries, some coming from the Jesuitical Missions of Miraflores and Alto Peru. It hosts echoes of history and the struggle for independence.
