BACK TO ARGENTINA TRAVEL GUIDE
CLIMATE
San Juan presents a privileged climate with maximum temperatures of 35º Celsius and minimums of 19º C in summer, with peaks of 13º C and 0º C in winter. Its main feature is its dryness, due to Pacific Ocean wind-borne humidity being blocked by the Andes mountains.
WHAT TO PACK
You are recommended to take light clothing for the daytime and some sweaters and jackets for the mornings and the evenings, which are generally cooler. You should bear in mind the time of year of your trip, especially if you are traveling in spring or summer, when trekking shoes and suitable light clothing are necessary, as well as a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you have no sunscreen, avoid exposure to direct sunlight around midday.
HEALTH
There are no endemic diseases in this area, so no special vaccines are required for entry.
Argentina is free of foot and mouth disease, so beef can be safely eaten.
Argentina has an important network of hospitals, clinics and sanitary posts throughout its territory, most with emergency services. The hospitals in the main cities can deal with high-complexity cases, while treatment is basic in nature in the remote villages.
WATER
All Argentine cities have drinking water treatment plants. However, to avoid any possible inconvenience, it is best to drink bottled water, especially when visiting remote attractions.
Different types of thermal water are also available: calcium-containing, chlorinated, magnesium-containing, radioactive, sodium-containing and sulfured.
TYPICAL LOCAL CUISINE
Locro, humita, tamales, empanadas, carbonada and chanfaina are the typical dishes. There is also chicha, a drink made from a mixture of cornflour and water, left to ferment in earthenware pots and then boiled; aloja, obtained from the fermented pods of the carob tree, and the excellent wines of Mendoza, San Juan and La Rioja, not to mention the cider from Calingasta (San Juan).
