COMMUNICATIONS IN ARGENTINA

Argentina has excellent telephonic services, fax, telegraphic and Internet.

Phones
You can dial directly Internationally from any point of the country. The international code of Argentina is 54, whereas the code of area of Buenos Aires is 11. All the telephone numbers of this city begin with 4 and the codes of area for long distance nacional calls changes digit according to the region: 1, City of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas 2, Southern Area of the interior of Argentina; 3, Northern Area of the interior of Argentina.

To call to cell phones in Buenos Aires it is necessary to prefix 15. To call to the interior of the country, dial 0 plus the prefix of the locality, and for International calls dial 00 plus the country code.
National domestic and International calls can be done from public phones, so called telecentros (telephone centres), locutorios or booths and in most hotels, although the last mentioned usually charge an extra 30 % for the calls.

The public phones work with cards that are sold sell in kiosks or in the offices ogf the telephone companies. You can also use most Argentinean coins. You can also visit any of the abovementioned locutorios where you pay cash and where you can also use a fax machine.

It is possible to find a public phone in almost every block, in the shops and in the restaurants, which are marked by a blue emblem. The majority of these work with cards that can be acquired in kiosks and the locutorios. The public phones work with card or with coins of a peso and of 50 and of 25 centavos.

The telecentros and locutorios are common in the big cities. The advantage of using them is that you pay for the time you speak, the person can see how long he has been speaking and therefore can control what he wants to speak and wants to spend.

There exists a standard rate and another one reduced for all calls. The schedule of reduced tariffs runs from Monday until Friday between 22:00 and 8:00. And on Saturday of 13:00 on until 8:00 of of the following Monday.

You can use the AT&T Direct service to communicate with any place in the world by collect call or using your credit card, dialling 0-800-222-1288 or 0-800-555-4288.

Mobile phones
The networks standards CDMA/TDMA work in the whole country. They are not compatible with GSM.

E-mail and access to Internet
As in other countries of Latin America, availability of Internet service is more and more common and economic in Argentina. Although with more facility in the big cities, it is possible to find Cybercafés or Internet service even in the so called telecentros. The prices are usually very competitive for which it is good to quote in different places first.
Some hotels also are provided with this service, in many of them it is free. In whatever place you choose to use the Internet you will be able to gain access to your e-mail account if this one belongs to some service mail Duch as Hotmail, gmail or Yahoo

Mail
The principal mail company in Argentine mail is the State owned Correo Central, nevertheless there exist other private mail companies that give the same service and that have local offices around the whole country. Goose and Servidor are but two of them. Using the normal mail service, a letter takes from 6 to 15 days from Buenos Aires to the United States, whereas England can take up to 10 to 15 days. It is recommended to put the postcards in an envelope so they arrive quicker.
There is also en Express mail service that takes from 3 to 5 days to any International destination.
To receive letters, they must be sent c/o to the Correo Central de Buenos Aires.

The principal post office in Buenos Aires is located on Sarmiento 189 and opens from 09.00 to 19.30, Mondays to Fridays.
Airmail to Europe takes from five to ten days.
Schedule of the post offices are: from 08.00 to 20.00 Mondays to Fridays and from 08.00 to 14.00 every Saturday

Telegrams
There exists a telegram service to other countries of the world managed by the Correo Central Argentino.
